RIP Jamie McCarthy

It was with great sadness that Riverstick /Kinsale AC heard of the passing of one of life’s loveliest of people Jamie McCarthy who died tragically in a car crash in Myrtle Beach in America on Valentines night .As well as being such lovely happy person he was a superb athlete. He always represented himself, his family, his club Riverstick/Kinsale AC, School (Kinsale community school and North Mon) and University (Caroline Costal University) and Country at the highest possible level in sport. He excelled at cross country and on track with many great victories. A great athlete and a wonderful young lad we all in the club came to admire and respect as he claimed success after success but always remained Jamie with the ready smile.

Liz O Callaghan, James O’ Mahony, Kathleen Maher nurtured and looked after him as he went through the ranks and especially when athletic scholarship opportunities arose. He loved the idea of going to America on Scholarship and this group of people researched and looked after him so he got the best opportunity. Brother Dooley of North Mon also directed him really well for the year he spent up in North Mon prior to going to the states. He represented his club and country in 2004 at the European cross country where he finished a magnificent 31st and also won a silver European cross country medal.

Jamie was a very thoughtful person .Every Christmas and throughout the year he rang committee members and coaches of the club to let them know how he was getting on and to check in with them.  He was a regular onlooker at Belgooly 4 at Christmas just meeting up with his former competitors and old club friends.  He continued to live in the states after University and it was great to see he still loved athletics as he continued to volunteer as a coach after his elite running career finished

Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents, family, friends and his partner who is quite unwell at this sad time.

May God and the angles keep him safe.
